Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born in Lynn at Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Lithuanian Jewish Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. When she was a young girl, Roman's father, a carnival barker, passed away, which made her mother Mary Pauline (Gold), to become cleaner or waitress to help them survive. Ruth was a student and grew up in poverty within Boston Massachusetts in the tenement district. The school she attended just two years later in pursuit of a career as an actor. The path she chose to take turned out to be strewn with obstacles and in New York, she obtained a job posing for stills for a crime magazine However, the stage was not a match for her. Her next job was as the "hat check" girl for a nightclub but she quit and returned to Boston. As an usherette, she worked during the day and then was a part of the New England Repertory Company by the evening. This was her first acting position that was permanent. She earned a bachelor's certificate in drama at Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
